Wellspring Midwifery was founded on the belief that high-quality, family-centered care that actively cultivates wellbeing can lead to a lifetime of health and healing for the entire family. We believe that educated families make empowered decisions, and thus we center our practice around shared decision-making, honoring and respecting what a family decides is best for their family. We recognize where our own lived experiences and privileges are limiting and support clients to develop strong community support networks so that all aspects of their identity are seen and celebrated throughout their childbearing journey. We are actively working toward a reality where all healthcare is expected to be culturally informed and client-centered. Until then, we humbly strive to offer anti-racist, queer-centered, and anti-oppressive care in everything we do. As two white people, we know that we must demonstrate this commitment with our actions and with our wallets. This work is deep and ongoing, and we are committed to a lifetime of this work.
We are often honored to work with student midwives. Our students come from all walks of life. We celebrate their identities and we ask our clients to do the same. Any disrespect based on the students' identities, including but not limited to their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender, will not be tolerated.
Please join us in supporting these local efforts to open the first Black-owned birth centers in Washington State!
Faisa Farole & Global Midwifery Services are raising funds to open WA's first Black woman-owned birth center right in our home city of Federal Way! This birth center will increase safe, supportive birthing options for Black families & babies and will help train more Black midwives.
Jazmin Williams & BLKBRY are raising funds to open WA's first Black-owned, -led, and -centered Wellness & Birth Center! This project will increase access to culturally-congruent care for Black birthing families, improve health and community outcomes, and expand training opportunities for Black birth workers.
We celebrate each of our client’s unique families and holistically tailor our services to each family’s needs and values. We emphasize the “care” in “midwifery care'' and strive to reduce barriers in accessing our services so that our families can spend more time resting and connecting with their loved ones and less time navigating healthcare systems that were not designed to serve them.
We see our role largely as educators, offering context and information and respect whatever informed choices you make for your body and your family. We offer care through a blend of evidence-based medicine, traditional wisdom, and intuitive knowing. We don’t “allow” or “not allow” our clients to do anything; you are in charge of your body!
Family-building looks different for everyone, and we strive to reflect the vast array of identities our clients bring with them into every aspect of our care, from intake forms to imagery to the language we use. We celebrate LGBTQIA2S+, trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and poly/non-monogamous families. We are dedicated to providing safe and appropriate care to families of all shapes, sizes, and structures.
We recognize that our own personal identities and cultural backgrounds mean that we may not be the best match for all families. While we would be honored to serve all potential clients, we know that outcomes are best for families when cultural congruency exists between client and provider. Therefore, we readily offer referrals to trusted providers who are the best match for families' cultures and lived experiences.
We are committed to promoting health and vibrancy and celebrate bodies of all shapes, sizes, and abilities. We have a weight-neutral approach to care with a strong belief in the Health at Every Size (HAES) model. We focus on foods and movement that make you feel great in your body and encourage families to connect to their cultural foods, ceremonies, and healing modalities. We have a strong network of bodyworkers with similar values to whom we offer referrals so that you can feel as best in your body as possible throughout the childbearing year.
We utilize a trauma-informed approach to all aspects of our care. We follow your lead in how we support you and your body. You are in charge of your healthcare, and we take the time needed to offer you care in a way that feels the safest for you.
We believe that nourished communities help hold families so that all birthing people and their loved ones can thrive. We aim to nourish communities so that the families who birth with us can continue to thrive as their babies grow up. Your midwives are deeply invested in their communities and believe that Wellspring Midwifery has an obligation to economically invest in birthing families by paying habitual reparations to Black & Indigenous-led organizations, birthworkers, and families.
Your midwives are committed to a lifetime of rigorous self-reflection by listening to, amplifying, and supporting leaders, educators, and activists who occupy the most complex intersections of marginalized identities. We commit to engaging in ongoing continuing education programs led by BIPOC individuals and engaging in at least quarterly training and/or book discussions on topics including reproductive justice and Black queer feminism as a practice. This commitment is an ongoing process of leveraging our own power and privilege to dismantle power structures such as racism, exploitative economic structures, and white supremacy, which systematically reward those who already have the most privilege while simultaneously disenfranchising those with the least.
We perform regular self-audits of our policies, care plans, and marketing materials to continually evaluate how we can further decenter white supremacy and cisheteropatriarchy in our healthcare. In addition, we proactively solicit feedback from our clients throughout care to adapt and learn to support each and every family better. We are here to serve you and your family.
We deeply honor the work of the Black, Indigenous, and immigrant midwives that came before us. We invite you to learn more about the important history of the midwives who came before us. Here are just a couple of sources:
