Newborn Hearing Screens

Hearing screens are recommended for all newborns in their first month of life. We offer hearing screens for all clients, as well as families in the care of other providers who are looking for a gentle, baby-centered hearing screen provider. The screen usually takes only a few minutes and can often be done while a newborn is sleeping, cuddling with a caregiver, or eating. 

We use a portable screening instrument that measures otoacoustic emissions (OAE) from your baby's ear. This means that the machine measures the function of the microscopic hair cells in the inner ear by measuring the sounds created in the inner ear after different tones are played through an ear piece. We cannot diagnose hearing loss, but we can let you know if your baby needs further testing with an audiologist.
